Shinobue is a simple traditional Japanese transverse flute made from bamboo. For centuries, its distinctive sound has been an essential part of Japanese festivals and traditional performing arts, including Kagura, Kabuki and folk music. Today, the possibilities of Shinobue continue to expand far beyond traditional music. It can be played alongside Taiko, Shamisen and other Japanese instruments, as well as piano, guitar and Western instruments in pop, jazz, classical music and many other genres. Its structure may be simple, but the range of tones and expression that can be created through breath is remarkably deep. WHAT CAN YOU LEARN FROM YASUKAZU KANO? Yasukazu KANO has challenged conventional ideas about Shinobue throughout his career, bringing together Japanese tradition and contemporary culture while creating new music through collaborations with musicians and artists around the world. In this workshop, you will experience his original Shinobue KANO Method, exploring: ✓ How to produce a beautiful and authentic sound ✓ How to create resonance ✓ How to develop your sound from low to high registers ✓ How to play naturally, as if you were singing ✓ How to develop richer tone and musical expression ✓ How breath, body and mind influence your sound If you already play the flute or another wind instrument, please bring your own instrument. Experience how the KANO Method can change your tone and expression. If you are a complete beginner, we will begin with the most important first step: making your first sound.
